attorneys & counselors at law

Prior to his beginning his legal career, Todd attended the highly competitive United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, later electing to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Syracuse University (’00).  After graduating from Syracuse, Todd worked several years as a civil engineer in California’s San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley before ultimately deciding to pursue a career in the law and eventually graduating from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, CA. As much as he loved San Diego (and still does!), the distance from family was difficult to maintain and Todd returned to his home state of New York to be closer to family and establish his legal career.

Since Todd’s admission to the practice of law in New York, he has built an extensive and successful Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Criminal Defense practice, obtaining invaluable defense and trial experience representing clients charged with everything from low-level violation and misdemeanor offenses up to the most serious class A felonies.

Upon realizing the degree to which many practice areas overlap, Todd has also developed significant experience over the years representing clients in family law, matrimonial/divorce matters, and in the purchase and sale of residential real estate to ensure that all Carpenter Law clients receive as complete a spectrum of legal services as they may require.

Todd’s commitment to his clients, diligence in protecting their rights, exceptional work product, and desire to continuously learn and grow as a professional have helped establish his reputation among clients, peers, opposing counsel and judges alike as one the areas most respected members of the DWI and Criminal Defense bars, resulting in multiple invitations from the Dutchess County Bar Association to lecture and educate other attorneys on both topics.

In 2018, Todd was honored to team up with esteemed former Senior Assistant District Attorney Jessica Z. Segal, Esq., as Of Counsel to Carpenter Law. Todd and Jessica both work diligently to advance the mission of Carpenter Law by providing exceptional legal representation and customer service to all our clients and potential clients.

Todd is admitted to practice in all courts of the State of New York, as well as the federal jurisdictions of the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York and has practiced law throughout the entire Hudson Valley and all five boroughs of New York City. He is a member in good standing of the New York State Bar Association, Dutchess County Bar Association, New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National College for DUI Defense.

Exceptional Legal Representation is Just the Beginning

We don’t just serve or meet your legal needs; we exceed them in every way. At Carpenter Law, you can rest assured you’ll receive the best customer service possible; service that begins and ends with exceptional legal representation and is strengthened by an open channel of communication between you and your attorney.

Real Estate Law

Carpenter Law represents real estate clients throughout the Hudson Valley. Buying or selling a home is an exciting time. It can also be incredibly stressful. Having an experienced real estate attorney on your side who has the experience to ensure your real estate transaction proceeds to closing smoothly is invaluable.

Although most real estate transactions are typically straightforward, the closing process is still highly technical and requires a professional who understands the details, knows what to look for, and knows how to protect their client’s best interests. If not handled properly and effectively, even seemingly simple issues can derail the entire closing process and potentially cost you hundreds of dollars with nothing to show for it. From contract negotiations, to title matters, lending issues, HOA rules, and last-minute adjustments at the closing table, the closing process requires diligence and constant attention to detail.

Having handled all the firm’s real estate transactions, Todd Carpenter has first-hand experience with every aspect of the closing process and has been confronted with nearly every closing problem possible. And with a network of real estate professionals available outside of the firm, including title companies, real estate agents and mortgage brokers, Carpenter Law is able to provide assistance or references for all manner of real estate concerns and get our clients to the closing table as quickly as possible.

Carpenter Law welcomes the opportunity to provide legal representation to buyers and sellers of:

  • Single family residences,
  • Multi-family residences,
  • Condominiums, and
  • Townhouses.

We also work regularly with real estate investors who might be interested in creative and non-traditional purchase arrangements.
Jessica Segal, Esq., Of Counsel to Carpenter Law PLLC, also provides information for beginner and experienced real estate investors as a regular guest on The Real Estate Roundup YouTube channel, presented by Kris Haskins here.

“Innocent until proven guilty” still means something at Carpenter Law. With over 30 years of combined criminal defense experience, we will fight for you and defend your rights with the passion – and compassion – you expect and deserve from the team you’ve chosen to protect your future and liberty. We have helped countless clients – many of whom were charged with very serious crimes – avoid jail or prison and, in many instances, avoid a criminal conviction entirely.

Criminal Defense & Proven Trial Attorneys

Not every case is appropriate for a plea bargain. Not every client wants a plea bargain. But, unfortunately, not every criminal defense attorney is a trial attorney. So it’s critical you choose a criminal defense firm that can handle your case from start to finish without you worrying about being forced into a plea to make it easier for your attorney.

You can be confident that no matter the nature of the charges against you Carpenter Law is ready, willing and most importantly able to take your case all the way to trial.

We begin preparing every case for trial from the very first consultation. What evidence needs to be gathered, investigated, disputed or suppressed? What are the good facts that can be used in support of your defense, and what bad facts can be reframed to either help your case or minimize the negative impact? What additional information do we need from the prosecution or witnesses? What additional information do we need from you to ensure you are portrayed as a human being, not a “defendant”?

Our clients are thoroughly involved in the representation process, and all options (plea offers, trial risks, etc.) will be thoroughly explained to you every step of the way to ensure you have a clear understanding of where your case is headed and the potential risk and consequences of each decision.

We Defend People, Not “Defendants”

If you have been charged with a crime or are being investigated for a crime, you need an attorney who understands more than just the basic elements of the offense with which you’ve been charged; you want an attorney who not only understands the “human element” of every case but who can also convey that effectively to the prosecution, so you can be seen as a person, not just a file, docket number or defendant. The attorneys of Carpenter Law have had great success in and pride themselves on putting together a complete defense for each client that includes the personal component of effective criminal defense work.

Your future, and your family’s future, deserves the criminal defense team of Carpenter Law. Call us today at (845) 493-1002 to schedule a free consultation if you or someone you love has been charged with any criminal offense, including:

The DWI Defense Team You Want When It Matters Most

If you’ve been arrested for DWI or another alcohol- or drug-related offense, your first concern after the dust settles is probably how a conviction will affect your life and your future. You have an important decision to make: do you call your real estate or family law attorney who may occasionally handle a basic DWI case? Or do you call an actual DWI defense attorney?

Understanding that distinction could mean the difference between keeping your license, your job, and your freedom, or potentially losing it all.

The attorneys of Carpenter Law have over 30 years of combined experience successfully handling DWI cases – as both the prosecution and defense.

Regardless of what you call it (drunk driving, DWI or DUI), alcohol or drug related driving offenses are incredibly serious and can result in the immediate loss of your driving privileges, extended periods of license suspension or revocation, crushing financial consequences (fines, surcharges, increased insurance rates, DMV assessments, and Ignition Interlock installation and maintenance fees), restitution, probation, and possibly prison.

If you’ve been arrested for DWI, you need a DWI defense team that will guide you through the system fully explaining all potential consequences to you, and who knows what to look for to get you the best result possible.

Most importantly, you need a DWI defense team that you know – and the prosecution knows – is not afraid to go to trial. You need Carpenter Law.

All Phases of DWI Defense

Some attorneys won’t handle refusal hearings. Some just don’t understand the science of DWI defense. Other attorneys simply try their best to work out a plea deal only to refer the case out to another attorney after negotiations have failed, which just causes unnecessary stress and frustration for the client in having to re-explain his or her case to a new attorney.

From initial arrest, through arraignment and suspension pending prosecution, up to and including trial (and at every stage along the way), you can be confident that the DWI defense team of Carpenter Law has done it all, done it successfully, and is never afraid or unwilling to do it again. After Carpenter Law accepts you as a client, you’ll be represented by our team of highly experienced attorneys during the entirety case.

Retaining a knowledgeable and experienced DWI defense attorney is the best step you can take after an arrest. If you or someone you care about has been charged with an alcohol or drug related driving offense, call Carpenter Law immediately.
