attorneys & counselors at law

Jessica grew up on the beaches of Long Island and earned a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, from Hofstra University in May of 1996. Thereafter, Jessica went on to attend Pace University School of Law in White Plains, New York, where she did an internship for Appellate Division Judge, Hon. Leo F. McGinity, before graduating in 1999. While in Law School, Jessica was a member of the Environmental Law Review and the International Criminal Moot Court.

Jessica spent the first 17 years after law school in Dutchess County as an Assistant District Attorney, quickly rising to Senior Assistant District Attorney. During her time as a lead prosecutor, Jessica successfully obtained verdicts in over one hundred criminal trials in the areas of Vehicular Assault/Homicide, Driving While Impaired (DWI) by Alcohol and/or Drugs, cases involving serious physical injury or death, and animal cruelty cases. She also developed invaluable experience inspecting crime scenes, evaluating expert crash reconstruction, and analyzing forensic toxicology results.

In 2017, Jessica took her injury and crash experience to the law firm of Stenger, Roberts, Davis & Diamond in Wappingers Falls, New York, where she litigated a variety of negligence claims. Most notably, Jessica secured a $1.1 million-dollar jury verdict in Sullivan County, New York for Personal injuries sustained against a negligent landlord and a $55,000 property damage jury verdict as a result of negligent driving in Dutchess County, New York.

During her career, Jessica has served as a member of the New York State DWI Advisory Council, a select invitation-only committee, tasked with developing standardized statewide law enforcement supporting deposition and field note forms. She also assisted in the development of a forensic evidence team involving the county medical examiner and Dutchess County SPCA Humane Law Enforcement Office to create a model to address the complexities of investigating allegations of animal abuse.

Jessica is currently a board member of the Council on Addiction Prevention & Education (CAPE) of Dutchess County and a regular speaker/presenter of the annual Teen Driving Program where she informs high school students and their parents about the legal consequences of DWI and underage drinking.

In 2018, Jessica joined Carpenter Law PLLC as Of Counsel, where she continues to provide exceptional legal services to the Hudson Valley and New York State in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense, and pistol permit representation (suspension, revocation, transfer and sale), among others.

Exceptional Legal Representation is Just the Beginning

We don’t just serve or meet your legal needs; we exceed them in every way. At Carpenter  We don’t just serve or meet your legal needs; we exceed them in every way. Criminal Defense & Proven Trial Attorneys

Not every case is appropriate for a plea bargain. Not every client wants a plea bargain. But, unfortunately, not every criminal defense attorney is a trial attorney. So it’s critical you choose a criminal defense firm that can handle your case from start to finish without you worrying about being forced into a plea to make it easier for your attorney.

You can be confident that no matter the nature of the charges against you Carpenter Law is ready, willing and most importantly able to take your case all the way to trial.

We begin preparing every case for trial from the very first consultation. What evidence needs to be gathered, investigated, disputed or suppressed? What are the good facts that can be used in support of your defense, and what bad facts can be reframed to either help your case or minimize the negative impact? What additional information do we need from the prosecution or witnesses? What additional information do we need from you to ensure you are portrayed as a human being, not a “defendant”?

Our clients are thoroughly involved in the representation process, and all options (plea offers, trial risks, etc.) will be thoroughly explained to you every step of the way to ensure you have a clear understanding of where your case is headed and the potential risk and consequences of each decision.

We Defend People, Not “Defendants”

If you have been charged with a crime or are being investigated for a crime, you need an attorney who understands more than just the basic elements of the offense with which you’ve been charged; you want an attorney who not only understands the “human element” of every case but who can also convey that effectively to the prosecution, so you can be seen as a person, not just a file, docket number or defendant. The attorneys of Carpenter Law have had great success in and pride themselves on putting together a complete defense for each client that includes the personal component of effective criminal defense work.

Your future, and your family’s future, deserves the criminal defense team of Carpenter Law. Call us today at (845) 493-1002 to schedule a free consultation if you or someone you love has been charged with any criminal offense, including:

The DWI Defense Team You Want When It Matters Most

If you’ve been arrested for DWI or another alcohol- or drug-related offense, your first concern after the dust settles is probably how a conviction will affect your life and your future. You have an important decision to make: do you call your real estate or family law attorney who may occasionally handle a basic DWI case? Or do you call an actual DWI defense attorney?

Understanding that distinction could mean the difference between keeping your license, your job, and your freedom, or potentially losing it all.

The attorneys of Carpenter Law have over 30 years of combined experience successfully handling DWI cases – as both the prosecution and defense.

Regardless of what you call it (drunk driving, DWI or DUI), alcohol or drug related driving offenses are incredibly serious and can result in the immediate loss of your driving privileges, extended periods of license suspension or revocation, crushing financial consequences (fines, surcharges, increased insurance rates, DMV assessments, and Ignition Interlock installation and maintenance fees), restitution, probation, and possibly prison.

If you’ve been arrested for DWI, you need a DWI defense team that will guide you through the system fully explaining all potential consequences to you, and who knows what to look for to get you the best result possible.

Most importantly, you need a DWI defense team that you know – and the prosecution knows – is not afraid to go to trial. You need Carpenter Law.

All Phases of DWI Defense

Some attorneys won’t handle refusal hearings. Some just don’t understand the science of DWI defense. Other attorneys simply try their best to work out a plea deal only to refer the case out to another attorney after negotiations have failed, which just causes unnecessary stress and frustration for the client in having to re-explain his or her case to a new attorney.

From initial arrest, through arraignment and suspension pending prosecution, up to and including trial (and at every stage along the way), you can be confident that the DWI defense team of Carpenter Law has done it all, done it successfully, and is never afraid or unwilling to do it again. After Carpenter Law accepts you as a client, you’ll be represented by our team of highly experienced attorneys during the entirety case.

Retaining a knowledgeable and experienced DWI defense attorney is the best step you can take after an arrest. If you or someone you care about has been charged with an alcohol or drug related driving offense, call Carpenter Law immediately.

Estate Planning

At Carpenter Law, liability prevention education is our passion. You can find attorney Jessica Segal at community events, answering questions, and discussing the common legal issues faced by small business owners. She is known by her clients to be approachable and a creative problem solver. Disclosing personal and financial information can be stressful, but Jessica will put your mind at ease from the first initial meeting.

Jessica spent the first 17 years of her career as a Prosecutor in Dutchess County, with a focus on vehicular injury and death cases. A fatal crash is a tragedy no one is ever prepared for. On a regular basis, Jessica would bear witness to unimaginable pain. After working with victims for so long, she became very aware that most families did not have a plan to protect their kids, family, or their assets. Carpenter Law offers estate planning services are designed to reduce those instances and better serve the community.

Estate planning is more than drafting documents. At Carpenter Law, every client gets an intake questionnaire so our team can learn about their family tree, family dynamic, what items they have in their possession, and what their goals and wishes are for their loved ones. At the first meeting, we will review this questionnaire and have a conversation about the different types of plans and options specific to their needs. Every client receives an individualized plan and is listened to and heard with empathy and compassion.

At Carpenter Law, we work alongside tax professionals to create a team approach. A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a business structure whereby the owners are not personally liable for the debts and actions of the corporation. It is a vehicle to separate personal assets from business assets. An LLC is a hybrid entity that combines the characteristics of a corporation with the simplicity of a sole proprietorship or partnership. Providing more than just liability protection, an LLC offers the flexibility to choose a tax structure based upon revenue and business goals.

In addition to filing an LLC with the state, New York State requires publication of a new business in a daily and weekly newspaper for six weeks. Each county designates which newspapers are selected for publication and the cost of each newspaper varies. County newspapers can be found on the County Clerk website. Proof of publication must be sent to the state once completed. Carpenter Law offers our clients the service of registering an LLC with the state, providing proof to the state that all requirements were completed, and publication.

Keep in mind that an S-Corporation or C-Corporation can be either a business entity or a tax structure elected by the LLC. Classifications can change as business grows. Reviewing an entity and tax structure yearly is a key factor. At the end of the day, as Robert Kiyosaki once said, “It’s not how much money you make, but how much money you keep.”

Carpenter Law is not like other law firms. Call us today at (845) 493-1002 to discuss your case with one of our attorneys and learn why we’re the right choice for you.
